Working at Discovery Initiatives
Discovery Initiatives is a major award winning, 10 year old, privately owned company selling award winning small group and tailor-made trips to discerning clients who love wilderness and wildlife. We are based out of pleasant refurbished offices in the centre of Cirencester, a small picturesque and historic market town in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside (pictured above). Discovery Initiatives was established in 1998 as one of the pioneers of responsible nature travel offering eight separate destinations and working with some of the world’s premier wildlife agencies to give real insight into wildlife, wilderness and conservation.
Today we go to 32 countries covering most of the world’s best wilderness regions and consist of a small team of travel experts. Furthermore we have a parent company in the same offices, Steppes Travel, who have a further 18 staff in the office and operate a range of high quality tailormade travel itineraries.
The heart of our business has always been our Country experts. All of us have travelled independently, as well as with some of our small groups to one or more of the countries we offer and we can all demonstrate a wide variety of country and natural history knowledge and an infectious passion for what we have experienced and seen. Each of our Country Directors is backed up by a Sales Administrator and all are well organised and have excellent communication skills.
The ethos of Discovery Initiatives is to provide our clients with exceptional customer service and a trip, which greatly surpasses their expectations. Furthermore we aim to do this with the least possible harm to our precious world, and with the greatest possible support to the conservation efforts in the regions we offer. As a result our clients have returned to us year after year and recommend us to others. Please click here to go to our mission statement

Field expert vacancies
We look for two types of expertise in considering new trips or destinations
Expert tour leaders
Leading experts who can act as Tour Leaders with relevant expertise in the field of natural history, to escort small groups on special interest trips around the world. The ability to communicate, lead and host groups in a dynamic and interesting way together with expert knowledge, local language and interest in the country in which you operate will be critical.
For example we have Expert UK-based Tour Leaders leading Big Cats tours to India, tours of Madagascar with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and expert botanists leading Eden Project tours to China and Slovenia. We have other nationalities leading trips in Congo, Gabon and Ecuador.
For these tours experts are paid a daily rate and all expenses associated with the tour are covered.
Local expertise from the host country
Our associations with wildlife and conservation agencies across the globe give us the opportunity to incorporate leading experts in their field onto our tours. They may include community leaders, field researchers, project leaders or project coordinators, allowing us to get real and often ‘privileged’ insight into a particular species and the conservation efforts in wilderness region across the world.
For example we have an elephant researcher hosting study tours in Botswana, local Dayak field experts from the Orangutan Foundation hosting tours in Tanjing Puting National Park in Borneo Kalimantan, and a marine researcher hosting a whale study off the coast of Ecuador.
For these types of programmes a negotiated contribution is made to the host community, agency or research team.
