  • An extraordinary and hospitable country often overlooked as a safari destination

  • Much less well travelled than East Africa, but with adundant wildlife, birdlife and of course Great Apes.

  • One of the best Birding regions in Africa

  • Good quality accommodation and increasingly good infrastructure

  • We offer both superb small group trips and tailormade itineraries

  • Our small group trips aims to show you the conservation efforts being made to sustain the great ape and wildlife of each region.

Uganda is a land of true contrasts, where the Eastern savannah meets the Western African jungle with dramatic effect. This unique eco-system has led to an astonishing diversity, from the source of the White Nile on Lake Victoria to the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains in the west, the forests and volcanoes in the south west to the desert plains of Karamoja in the North.

No other African destination has the range of habitats that can be seen in Uganda which offers some of the most varied wildlife experiences possible and attracts the more special interest wildlife enthusiast.

Whilst most tours concentrate on the country’s most famous residents, the Mountain Gorillas of the Bwindi Impenetrable forest, Uganda also has one of the richest primate habitats in the world. The forest home to wild chimpanzees, Red and Black and White colobus, Mangabey’s, Blue Monkey’s and the elusive L’Hoest’s Monkey amongst others, is in other parks like Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Semliki National Parks.

Other national parks also house huge herds of ‘plains’ wildlife more commonly associated with Kenya and Tanzania including elephant, buffalo, lions and leopard and with over a thousand bird species, it is Africa’s top birding destination, a trip to Uganda makes for one of the most diverse wildlife experiences on earth.

Add to this veritable Eden is a welcome unlike anywhere else, of overwhelming warmth, hospitality and interest in you as a ‘Mizunga’.

Little wonder we like to keep it a bit of a secret!

Gorilla and Chimpanzee permits

You can track Gorillas in both Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda, though Mgahinga is unpredictable. You will need to purchase a Gorilla permits costing c$360 each (preferably 6 months in advance) to ensure you can go tracking. There is a very limited supply. Bwindi has 3 family gorilla groups to see including the Nkuringo, Ruhengeri and Habinyanja groups. The best chimp tracking is in Kibale Forest, where we can get permits on your ehalf to track them for a half or full day.

Weather conditions

The majority of nature tourism focuses on Southern and Western Uganda, a lush and green country, helped by Lake Victoria and its altitude. The best time to travel is from May to October and then January to February during teh two dry seasons, although you can expect some rain at any time especially in Bwindi. Nights can be cool so take both good raingear and a jumper.

Visas and Vaccinations

Visas are required for entry into Uganda by UK citizens, and some European countries, but not required for Americans. Yellow fever is essential and we recommend the following inoculations: typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis A. Malaria is present in Uganda. It is important that you consult a medical practitioner.

Fitness and Health

A good level of fitness will allow you to fully appreciate a safari in Uganda, especially Gorilla tracking. We advise daily walking and exercise in preparation for the often challenging tracking that will be undertaken. Groups have been known to do up to 8 hours of walking in the forest on steep slopes, the terrain in Bwindi is particularly steep in places and you will discover that the gorillas are aptly named, and so is the forest!

The trip was very good, Sam and Amon were superb. They were safe drivers, knowledgeable guides, exceedingly helpful, with nothing being too much trouble.
