  • Gain a unique understanding of this natural phenomenon

  • Be part of the feeding frenzy

  • Do not need a dive certificate – snorkelling and surface-viewing

  • Money helps fund the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa

Snorkel amongst this great feeding frenzy, the famous Sardine Run. A unique marine spectacle.

Described as one of the greatest marine spectacles on earth, the sardine run takes place every year between May and July, encompassing shoals of sardines up to 15km long, three-and-a-half kilometres wide and 40km deep (in sheer biomass, the sardine migration rivals that of the wildebeest through the great plains of Africa!). This is an adventurous and ‘hands-on’ eight day (UK-UK) African marine safari, placing you ‘in’ the sardine run where you will experience the phenomenal marine-life action (snorkelling and surface viewing).

The Discovery Initiatives’ Sardine Run Marine Safari is aimed at anyone who has an interest in marine life and wants an informative, but fun and ‘hands-on’ adventure.

Millions of sardines make their way from the nutrient-rich cool waters off the Cape using the Agulhas current which sweeps them past the Transkei (Wild Coast) and on to Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal. Although the Sardine Run historically occurs between June and July, no one has told the sardines this! The Sardine Run can therefore not be guaranteed, but an incredible diversity of marine life and an informative marine adventure is guaranteed.

This safari is based from the comfortable Quarry Lake Inn, in East London, the second largest city in the Eastern Cape and includes a maximum number of only eight clients, ensuring a highly personal small group trip.

A financial contribution is made to The Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa which supports the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) to raise awareness of marine conservation and The Marine and Coastal Working Group promoting healthy marine and coastal ecosystems.
