This pioneering expeditionary trip heads into the heart of the Congolese rainforest in search of the bonobo, the last great ape to be discovered by science. Head through the heart of one of Africa’s most enigmatic regions and genuine heart of darkness, along the famous Congo river, following in the footsteps of the great explorers, camping in some of the most unexplored regions on the planet. The bonobos’ peace loving lifestyle is at odds with the fact that they are found only in one of the most volatile countries in Africa, but since 2007’s election, there is cautious optimisim for the country that was once the jewel in the scramble for Africa.
Threatened by the loss of their rainforest habitat and an escalating bushmeat trade, bonobos are in serious trouble and this trip aims to raise awareness of their plight and also funds for an internationally recognised wildlife charity. By raising awareness through these expeditionary tours, the wildlife charity is implementing a conservation plan aimed at stopping the killing of the least know Graet apes, the bonobos and the destruction their habitat and whilst scientific research is at the heart of this effort, it is backed by plans to improve economic conditions for local people – in effect sustainable tourism.
