Discovery Initiatives was invited in 2003 by Pantanal landowners to help develop high quality and responsible nature tours to the Southern Pantanal area. The result is a superb and in depth insight into this wilderness wonderland of wetlands, unequalled in size in the world.
As personal guests of ranch families in the area, tailormade or sall group tours allows you to see an extraordinary amount of wildlife and a richness of birdlife far greater and easier to see than in the Amazon, and amongst a cattle ranching culture. A visit to the famous Iguazu Falls and the surrounding National Park and then some nights in Rio de Janeiro can be arranged easily as part of a tailormade extension
The Southern Pantanal is relatively new to ecotourism, and unlike the more easily accessed Northern Pantanal, is still very authentic and relatively uncommercial. Wildlife has continued to flourish alongside the centuries old pantanieros culture of cattle ranching. Expect to see all the species that the Amazon is famous for including: capybaras, tapirs, marsh and pampas deer, peccary, giant otters, coati, caiman and the extraordinary slim giant anteaters.
Pumas and jaguars are also fairly common, though elusive. Birdlife is extraordinary and prolific with 650 species in total. Vast numbers congregate around certain riverbanks, pools or rest in the evenings. These include jabiru storks, turtle vultures and buff necked ibis, the tacha (Southern Screamer). Toucans and macaws are plentiful including the endangered Hyacinth macaws.
These tours help to establish high quality nature tourism amongst these landowners to ensure the Pantanal remains a conservation area for generations to come.

Discovery Initiatives was invited by Pantanal landowners to help and advise them on developing high quality and responsible nature tours to the Southern Pantanal area in 2002. These tours are the result of this cooperation and visit.
These tours help to establish high quality nature tourism amongst these landowners, some new to nature tourism, and helps to ensure the Pantanal wetlands remains a conservation area for generations to come.
Field Expertise
Mauricio Copetti
Mauricio was born and brought up on a beautiful ranch in the Pantanal called Refugio de Ilha, on the southern boundaries of the wetlands, the very ranch that we start this wildlife tour from.
He is infused with all the character and insight of this wilderness. A filmmaker by profession he is also a passionate naturalist with real knowledge of the flora and fauna and a host of stories to regale you while walking or in a small boat pottering through this landscape.
His infectious humour and good English helps to ensure a remarkable insight into these people and the Panteneiros culture.
Tailormade and small groups tours are led by field experts for the whole tour in the Pantanal. Tailormade journeys will be accompanied by experts from each of the ranch homes and haciendas that your visit.
