Spitzbergen evokes images of isolation and a stark beauty where long daylight hours reveal a wilderness home to wandering Polar Bears and imposing whales gliding through icy seas.

Wildlife cruises around Spitzbergen, or Svalbard in Norway, uncover one of the most romantic regions of the European Arctic combining as it does both an evocative name and a genuine sense of wilderness. Covering an area almost as big as the Republic of Ireland, Spitzbergen with its tiny population of 3500 living in five settlements is still virtually unspoilt.

Offering almost 24 hour daylight in early summer and with the northern regions offering almost certain the opportunity to see Polar Bears, Walruses and enjoy Seal watching, combined with its rugged mountains, sweeping tundra, ice caps and glaciers, it is a true High Arctic archipelago, only 600 miles from the North Pole.

Its abundant wildlife was once a huge draw for whalers and trappers but now discerning visitors on these wildlife cruises are discovering the attractions of huge Arctic seabird colonies and the chance to enjoy and photograph species other species like Reindeer, Arctic Fox, Bearded and Ringed Seals, and the Beluga or ‘White’ Whale.

Based on comfortable ice strengthened vessels, with only 50 passengers, they prove ideal for these expeditionary Norwegian cruises. Moving as often as possible on foot and transported by small Zodiac craft between landing spots for viewing wildlife, this is the finest way to explore the Arctic region, and its utter wilderness, peace and colour.
