Uganda and Rwanda are green oases in the heart of Africa, where we offer you the chance to track gorillas up to 5 times alongside an experienced primate expert.

Uganda and Rwanda are green oases in the heart of Africa, where the eastern savannah meets the West African Jungle. Lands of charm and infinite hospitality, they are also home to the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

Discovery Initiatives was encouraged by the Mountain Gorilla wildlife agencies to run these gorilla conservation support tours to the Virungas. The aim is not only to see the mountain gorillas in this fragile environment, but to allow visitors to get a better understanding of the issues that local people and other wildlife face. The heart of the trip is in the mists of the Virunga Volcanoes, with visits to conservation projects and local communities in both Uganda and Rwanda, and meetings with experts and guardians helping to study and save these creatures. The adventure is led by an experienced primatologist, Julia Lloyd.

Unlike many other primate tours, our gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda offers much more than just a glimpse into the world of the gorilla, but aims to feature a more holistic approach to mountain gorilla tourism in each area. Your participation in this tour helps to directly fund local conservation projects through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and offering you-not the usual one Gorilla permit-but five potential opportunities to see these magnificent gorillas in the wild.

This Trip Supports..

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

Each tour is a direct support mechanism to Mountain Gorilla conservation. Each tour raises between US$600 and US$1000 depending on group size for Mountain Gorilla conservation and is presented to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International representative whilst the group is in Rwanda.

Furthermore your payment for Gorilla permits in Uganda and Rwanda has an immediate result. The entire Uganda Wildlife Authority is funded off the back of the Park permits, including 10 reserves in total, and part of the park fee (included in the costs) goes back to community enterprises in Bwindi and the Virungas themselves.

Feedback from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitat in Africa. In recent years, regular contributions from Discovery Initiatives clients, who I have often had the chance to meet and talk to as part of their Gorilla trekking tours, have been used to provide various materials to support the field conservation and training activities at Karisoke Research Centre.

This includes the purchase of a motorcycle to provide transport for the coordination of field operations and contributed to the purchase of library reference materials that support student training activities within the National University of Rwanda. The funds provided by Discovery Initiatives have helped us to continue essential conservation work and to help inspire young Rwandan’s to become tomorrow’s conservationists.
