Pioneering cruise to the Russian Arctic and the Polar Bear dens of Wrangel Island

Discover the north eastern part of Eurasia (Chukotka) in a way that has never been possible before. On this expedition you cruise across the Arctic Circle through the Bering Strait and into the Arctic sea. It will be mid summer with 24 hour daylight and the ice will have retreated.

On shore you will meet the Chukchis, who have learnt how to live in one of the harshest environments on the globe. You will see an abundance of wildlife, many of the species are migratory, coming here only to breed, but for others like the polar bear, walrus, and reindeer this is their home.

We plan two days at Wrangel Island, a world class Nature Reserve, which is often referred to as the ‘Polar Bear Maternity Ward’.

In an expedition first, this expedition also includes an overnight camping expedition to the tundra inland from Egvekinot to spend the night with traditional reindeer herders.

This Trip Supports..

Scott Polar Research Institute

The Scott Polar Research Institute was formed in 1920 as a memorial to Captain Scott and his colleagues and is now a major international centre for polar research, information and expertise. From its base in Cambridge, the Institute provides a service to scientists, explorers, governments, industries, polar inhabitants and even armchair travellers the world over.

Discovery Initiatives makes all Polar travellers members of the Friends of the Research Institute.

Expertise will include leaders like:

Rodney Russ
Rodney worked for 12 years as a biologist for New Zealand Wildlife Service on the management of rare and endangered bird species. It was during this work that he came to appreciate the importance of advocacy as a conservation tool. Rodney can still be regularly found doing what he likes doing best, leading expeditions on the ‘Spirit of Enderby’.

Aaron Russ
Rodney’s son Aaron literally grew up in the Southern Ocean, surrounded by wildlife and wilderness. Aaron studied zoology and geology at Canterbury University, New Zealand, graduating with an Honours degree. He began expedition leading for Heritage Expeditions but has subsequently led expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula, the High Arctic and Galapagos Islands.

This cruise has never been offered before so it is a pioneering trip. To get details on the feedback from our other Arctic trips please do contact us or view other Arctic trips.
