The WildCRU projects strive to foster all four elements of its Conservation Quartet: research to understand the problem, education to explain it, community involvement to ensure participation and acceptance and implementation of a solution.

Field Expertise

Dave Carson

Dave Carson

With his infectious enthusiasm and passion for the bush, Zimbabwean born Dave is one of the finest professional guides in Zimbabwe. Running mobile safaris in both Zimbabwe and Botswana, his knowledge of the bush and its wildlife is both fascinating and highly entertaining. Currently Dave is one of the few guides who operate in the northern watershed in Hwange National Park, which is home to one of the last remaining viable populations of Black Rhino in Africa. Having being involved in the safari industry for twenty years, Dave specialises in tracking these wild and often temperamental animals.

The WildCRU’s team of lion researchers based in Hwange National Park includes Jane Hunt and Brent Stapelkamp.

Jane was born in Zimbabwe and has been involved in conservation and wildlife for over twenty years: one of a handful of qualified guides that is allowed to undertake armed walking safaris – no mean feat in a predominantly male orientated field! Jane joined the lion research project in 2003 and often spends days alone in the bush, observing, tracking and collaring the lions that form part of the research project, Amongst her many and varied qualifications Jane has her dangerous drugs licence, enabling her to dart and tranquilise any species of wildlife. A truly dedicated conservationist, Jane is a fountain of knowledge, bush wisdom and has enormous empathy for wildlife.

Zimbabwean born Brent led safaris in Hwange National Park before pursuing his degree in Wildlife Management. Having worked on the Hwange Lion Research project for over a year, Brent is responsible for the day-to-day data collection and is looking forward to completing his Dangerous Drugs course in 2008, which will allow him to dart and collar lions.
