  • An exceptional opportunity for a genuine insight into Maasai culture

  • An in depth understanding of the relationship between communities and wildlife conservation

  • Enjoy privileged insight into the most famous wildlife habitat in Africa complete with the ‘Big Five’, through Maasai eyes.

  • Learn new bush and survival skills you never knew you needed!

The Maasai culture has withstood the test of time as one that can maintain its own unique individuality and also survive with its own integrity, unique style of governance and distinctive characteristics within a rapidly changing Africa.

Seldom today can one experience as a traveller a living culture in an authentic, interactive and appropriate manner. This programme sets out to bridge this, allowing both a reasonable length of time to get to know each other and have genuine experiences together that form the ultimate bond of friendship and distil mutual respect, understanding and wisdom. This is not how the ‘white man’ sees the wilderness and its abundance but how the Maasai and its Warrior class view the world and live amongst its wild creatures.

Set within the ecosystem of the Mara Reserve, famous for its huge herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope, together with all the big cats, this is an extraordinary opportunity to ‘go bush’ with your family or friends. Gain in depth experience in wildlife tracking following an elephant or a leopard, learn survival skills, visit a Maasai village, learn how to use bow, arrows, pangas and spears, build a bush camp, tend goats and cattle whilst listening to Maasai stories, songs and their drums and flutes and learn to dance Maasai style under a brilliant moon.

This Trip Supports..

Maasai Moran of Saruni Yaile Conservancy

The Maasai Moran of Saruni Yaile Conservancy Mamura Konyi, Gekeli Sadera, David Nchoe, James Murijoi, Ole Solio, Ole Timan, Thomas Roriko and Kigera Sermente

These are the sons of the Maasai landowners who own the land around Saruni and are the future leaders of our Saruni Yaile Conservancy community. In partnership with Saruni Lodge we aim to sponsor a student to the Koiyaki Guiding School each year, through a contribution from each of these programmes. This hugely successful school teaches young Maasai Morans and Maasai ladies to guide tourists in the Mara. Successfully trained and employed guides provide communities with income and support that would not be possible otherwise, as well as being important ambassadors within their communities for the continued conservation of their unique habitat.

Field Expertise

John Ole Nchoe

John Ole Nchoe

John is a member of the community living near Saruni and is well known for his charisma and contagious laughter. A professional guide born and bred in the Maasai Mara, John has been a ranger for almost ten years protecting the rhinos in Olchorro Group Ranch, a community wildlife project based on a mountain near Saruni Lodge. Now 34, married to two wives and with 5 children, John likes to be described as ‘a typical Maasai’: tall, lean, strong, witty, interested in people, with a strong sense of his Maasai identity and background, but also able to connect with other cultures. Very good with children and families, always ready to laugh and exchange jokes, he has been with Saruni since the beginning. He was born on a Maasai boma that at the time was placed very near the tented camp, and the mountains and valleys of the Yaile Conservancy are his natural backyard.

As this is a new programme we do not have direct feedback of the whole weeks parogramme as yet however should you wish to speak to any number of our clients who have enjoyed an East Africa or Kenya safari holiday with us, please do contact us and we would be delighted to help to put you in touch.

Our ‘Guinea Pig’ clients just reported back from a day with the Warriors with his 6 children.

What an absolutely amazing day!! Everyone had the most incredible time.
