Botswana offers a refreshingly uncrowded wildlife destination with a low volume, high-end tourism policy, resulting in small, intimate eco-lodges in pristine wilderness areas.
It is a country of stark contrasts with an inland delta which is completely surrounded by arid Kalahari savanna.
The Okavango Delta is arguably the greatest natural sanctuary left in Africa today with ancient patterns of watercourses, islands and game trails.
The Ultimate Wilderness Experience
For an unforgettable wilderness experience, Botswana will not fail to deliver. With probably the continent’s best population of highly endangered predators, it plays host to some of the rarer species such as wild dog and cheetah. But even the country’s smallest residents, such as the tiny painted reed frogs and animated meerkats, provide fascinating entertainment. A Botswana safari provides a unique insight into ‘raw’ Africa, at its wildest.
A Family Adventure
For children, a Botswana safari will undoubtedly be an unforgettable family adventure. Most Botswana lodges carry a minimum age limit of between 8 and 12 years.
An option available to families with young children is to book a private safari which will include the use of a private safari vehicle. Some Botswana safari operators offer fabulous family programmes where children pursue their own wilderness activities while the adults follow their own programme.

The best time to travel
There simply isn’t one ‘best time’ to visit Botswana. However there are certain seasons which special interest groups should note:
Best birding months are November – March when the delta is brimming with migratory birds.
Best botanical months are December – May when the vegetation is lush and green, and when most plants are in flower.
SUMMER: November/December – April, days are hot and generally sunny in the morning with possible afternoon thunder storms. Daytime temperatures can rise to 38ºC and night temperatures drop to around 20ºC – 25ºC. The ‘rainy season’ begins late in October/November and ends in March. The northern areas receive up to 700mm of rain while the Kalahari Desert area averages as little as 225mm.
WINTER: May – October/November, days are dry, sunny and cool to warm while evening temperatures drop sharply. Daytime temperatures generally reach 20ºC and can drop to as low as 5ºC at night. Please note that exceptionally cold spells can occur (although this is the exception rather than the rule) so it is recommended to bring appropriate clothing, just in case!
Visas and Health
You must have a valid passport for entry into Botswana. No special vaccinations are required but prophylactics against malaria should be taken as it is prevalent throughout. We recommend that you consult a medical practitioner or call MASTA on 0906 822 4100 (premium rate line) at least one month before departure. For full enjoyment of our safaris participants should be reasonably fit and healthy. Most safari programmes will not involve much walking, unless specifically requested.
