Eight times the size of Britain, Mexico lies just south of the United States of America and north of Belize and Guatemala. To the east is the Yucatan Peninsula, with its shores in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea with its long white beaches. To the west is the Pacific Ocean forming wide dramatic bays and to the northwest is the peninsula of Baja California separated from the mainland by the Sea of Cortes.
Due partly to its size Mexico has an immense variation of habitats ranging from tropical forests in the south to huge expanses of deserts in the north. This explains why it is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world. Birdlife seems to thrive; including parrots, toucans and macaws and the lowlands and rainforest of Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo are home to such exotic wildlife as ocelots, anteaters, tapirs, howler and spider monkeys plus jaguar the largest wildcats in the Americas. Even the underwater world can offer a richness of species from grey whales to marlin and the beaches are important nesting places for sea turtles.
