LOWLAND GORILLA
Lowland Gorilla Tracking, Republic Of Congo & Central African Republic
Lowland gorillas inhabit the forests of Central Africa, found in Cameroon, C.A.R. Republic of Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guineau, distinguished from the better known mountain gorillas by having a shorter brown fur and being slightly smaller in size. They are also in a much better state than their mountainous cousins, with numbers estimated between 30-50,000. However, given the habitat in which they live, our knowledge of them is limited. Whilst there is a dominant silverback, the groups tend to be smaller than mountain gorillas and their diet also varies slightly, with the herbaceaous vegetation found around the swamp clearings in the forest and termites being high on their list! Unlike mountain gorillas it is also common to observe them feeding high in trees in order to access leaves and fruit directly.
